The best Travel coffee makers of 2021

You are away from home, and you long for a cup of coffee, but there is no coffee machine nearby. Luckily for you, there are a number of travel coffee makers on the market that can help you with this. All of these options are both compact and lightweight and you won't even notice them when carrying your travel bags.

Presso X

A travel coffee maker should be both compact and easy to use.
The Presso X save you the heavy lifting required with many of the other travel coffee makers on this list.

A big difference from the other coffee makers on this list is that the Presso X does not need to use an external heat source. This device has a rechargeable battery. You can charge it anywhere in the world via USB. This way you can make hot coffee without being dependent on an extra kettle.

The AeroPress is a travel coffee maker invented by Alan Adler in 2005. The device has been used for years for making coffee when you are away from home.

This device consists of 3 parts. It is a plastic cylinder with a filter carrier on one side and a hole for the piston on the other side. By means of the piston you eventually press your own coffee.

The technique for the Aeropress is relatively simple, you should have mastered it after 3 attempts and a good explanation.

The device weighs 350 grams and is easy to carry. Although the device is not made of strong material, it does not break easily. An ideal travel coffee maker for the real barista!

Unfortunately you cannot brew strong Espresso with the Aeropress, and you will sometimes find some bitter particles in the coffee on the first attempts. However, this is less common once you get a feel for it.

You will have to experiment a bit with the Aeropress for your perfect coffee. You can determine certain factors for a delicious cup of coffee with the Aeropress yourself, by this we mean the throughput times, water temperature and different grinds.

Brewing a cup of coffee with this device does not take long, to start you have to the water come into contact with the coffee. This process takes about a minute and a half. After this, the coffee should be drawn through the filter. This will take about 25 seconds, by adjusting this time a little you can change the taste of the coffee.

The AeroPress does not heat the water itself, this can be difficult when you travel are.

The Handpresso pump is a travel coffee maker with a special shape. However, don't let the appearance of a bicycle pump mislead you.
You can still make a delicious espresso with this.Because the pump of the Handpresso has to be pumped with your own hands, you can produce a pump pressure of up to 16 bar!

The Handpresso is pricey for a travel coffee maker that does not heat the water itself. In contrast to the AeroPress, you can only brew one cup of coffee at a time.
This compact device weighs about 500 grams and is not a heavy burden to take with you on a trip.
The espresso pump uses ground coffee and ESE pads. The ESE pads in particular are easy to take with you when you travel.

The Handpresso, like most coffee makers on this list, is easy to use, and you should have mastered the technique after 2 or 3 attempts. .

The Handpresso travel coffee maker is useful for camping or a hotel. Of course you still need hot water.

Foldable coffee filter

A collapsible coffee filter is compact and does not cost much.
Using a collapsible coffee filter is quite simple. You put this product in a cup or mug, then you pour in ground coffee and finally you pour in hot water.
You don't have to look for suitable filter paper for this product, any size filter paper will fit.

Unfortunately, nothing can comewithout drawbacks.
During use, we have noticed that only a coffee filter does not filter everything well. This sometimes causes bitter particles to end up in the coffee. There is also no pump pressure.
The X-Brew coffee dripper is perfect for a simple coffee lover who is satisfied with all types of coffee.

The NanoPresso from Wacaco is comparable to the aforementioned handpresso pump. This is a travel coffee maker that is very easy to carry, but does have a number of drawbacks. The device weighs 336 grams, making it one of the lighter devices on this list. The NanoPresso has a length of 15.6 cm and is without a doubt a small and compact coffee machine.

This device costs € 53.90 (at the time of writing) and is therefore also a lot cheaper than the pump from Handpresso.

Not surprising, but unfortunately, just like the Handpresso pump, you cannot make hot coffee with this unless you have hot water at hand, which is often not the case. You would therefore have to bring an extra kettle with you, so that this compact device for making coffee will suddenly take up some space.

Making coffee with the NanoPresso requires power, just like the Handpresso. You have to generate the pump pressure yourself to make your cup of coffee. It could be difficult to keep the pump pressure at a consistent level during brewing. But once you have mastered this, you can manually generate a pump pressure of up to 18 bar.

Just like the Presso X, the NanoPresso has a capacity of 80 ml, which is especially good for small to medium-sized coffee drinks.
The choice for a travel coffee maker like the NanoPresso  therefore depends on your situation. If you have hot water available, this may be an option.

Which travel coffee maker should I choose?

That depends on your own coffee wishes. If you're happy with simple coffee and like bargains, the X-Brew is a good option. If you are a lover of espresso or other strong drinks, then both the NanoPresso and the AeroPress could be a good option.

You may already be interested in the Handpresso and AeroPresso but don't want to take an extra kettle with you on your adventures. Then the Presso X  is a good option.

Which travel coffee maker do you like to use on all your adventures?
